The course expands on existing knowledge of population health to include care of the individuals, families, and communities in community-based settings. Emphasis is placed on understanding epidemiologic methods, social determinants of health and disparities, health care policy, health promotion and disease prevention, health risk, and cultural considerations.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Apply research and aging theories to assess the needs and promote positive outcomes for older adults.
2. Utilize data from various resources to identify issues specific to quality improvement, safety, and optimal health outcomes of the older adult individual, family, and community.
3. Explore the role of the nurse as advocate for promotion of optimal health outcomes, maintaining individual, family, and community autonomy.
4. Demonstrate effective interprofessional communication and collaboration in provision of team-based care of the older adult individual, family, and community.
5. Apply the ethical, moral, and legal concepts relevant to the care of older adults and their care partners.
