Reaction to “Reaching the Internet Generation”

Some of the statistics in this talk surprised me, but they also make a lot of sense.  My generation is not as grown up as the generations before us and therefore we do not partake in numerous activities at a younger age compared to the older generations.  Many people think that teenagers grow up faster these days, but that is not actually the case.  More seniors and 18 year olds are actually waiting longer before doing certain ‘adult’ activities.  This can be one of the main reasons why the transition to college is difficult for so many.  These first years never had to make decisions themselves and now they can’t make any without consulting their parents.  Many are also being exposed to activities that they were not exposed to in high school, such as drinking and partying.  Yes, there are several who have done this before college, but the numbers show that those students are decreasing. It looks like teens are not growing up as fast as people thought.

I am curious. How do you think technology has played a part in this change of behaviors in relation to making one’s own decisions? Thanks for sharing your initial thoughts, Karsyn.
